Consider the extreme mega drought gripping utah and the current state of the Great Salt Lake.
Utah is classified as being in severe or extreme drought conditions. Small parts of the state have somewhat less serious drought conditions at the moments.
The Great Salt Lake Basin around the Stratos Project area has a mere 2% of its usual snowpack.
RED IS SCARY BAD. Go here and watch how this becomes even more dire as the summer proceeds.
Current condition of GSL is in the EXTREME ADVERSE STATE, which begins when water falls below 4192 ft in South arm. The South arm is currently 1.1 ft below that level, and falling.
Grow the FLOW has an excellent tracker of data about the DIRE and unhealthy condition of the Great Salt Lake.
Utah’s Leadership Failures Drop Great Salt Lake Water Level to 4,192 Feet
The Great Salt Lake’s South Arm dropped to 4,192 feet above sea level, triggering toothless conservation measures which are too little and far too late for this struggling ecosystem. The lake is now on track to hit a new historic low in 2026, jeopardizing the 12 million migratory birds it harbors annually, the $1.3 million lake-supported economy, and the health of all Wasatch Front residents.
Utah legislators are also preparing to meet in a special session and legislate to dry up the North Arm of the Great Salt Lake, which they have been preparing to do in legislation passed over the last few legislative sessions. Since the North Arm represents 40% of the surface area of the lake, this move formalizes Utah’s leadership failure in protecting the largest remaining wetland ecosystem in the American West.
This is a disaster we could have avoided had state leaders not squandered the precious time they had to raise water levels.
What happened at May 4th, 2026 Box Elder County "public meeting"?
Commissioners disrespected the public, and fled from their own enormous public meeting about the Stratos project being pushed by corrupt state leadership and a state agency created in 2007 to support military jobs in Utah.
The Box Elder commission refused to accept public comment in a public meeting.
That was the second refusal of public comments that followed on a deliberate deflection of public input at an April 22, 2026 meeting. The board succeeded in preventing public comment and the public was pissed. about that. effectively for the 3rd time.
This upset the audience.
Then the middle commissioner threatened to "sic" their police on hecklers.
False misinformation presented by commissioners riled up the audience again.
Whining and swearing ensured.
More heckling.
Commissioners fled an enormous public meeting.
This was an enormous meeting that they had organized, prevented the public from providing their input in public, hid behind a "secret web site with in order to involve the public, and then cowardly voted to allow Stratos project to proceed.
Box Elder County Commissioners claiming, falsely, that the public HAD been allowed to speak at an open meeting. (Middle commissioner mumbles this lie at about 1:52). The only members of the public who spoke at an April 22, 2026 meeting were landowners. They knew about the plan to destroy our Great Salt Lake and AIR and Water because got undisclosed large contracts for their ranch land and water right.
The middle commissioner proceeded to threaten a crowd of ~2000 people with arrest, pointing out the enormous police force his team had called in in advance for their own protection.
The public came in good faith, were trying to protect our state from Stratos Project, to finally have a chance to speak in public, and we were treated like pesky nuisances.
Commissioners showed the public ZERO respect.
Scroll to 25 min to hear a commissioner say "for Hell's sake grow up"
They walked out of a giant public meeting that they had called.
