ACTION: CONTACTING LDS LAWMAKERS

MELISSA RECOMMENDS THAT LAWMAKERS TO THE FOLLOWING

In Congress, formal accountability would look like:

  • Voting on resolutions condemning or challenging pardons
  • Public statements criticizing the pardons
  • Supporting oversight or investigations
  • Investigate I.C.E.
  • Reduce or cap I.C.E. funding
  • Prohibit funds from being used for:
  1. Warrantless arrests
  2. Raids at schools, churches, hospitals
  3. Detention beyond a certain number of days
  4. Attach conditions to ICE funding
  • Narrow ICE’s enforcement authority
  • Require judicial warrants for arrests or searches
  • Mandate due process protections
  • Limit cooperation between ICE and local law enforcement
  • Strengthen detainee rights and access to legal counsel
  • Publicly condemn unlawful ICE practices
  • Use media, floor speeches, and letters
  • Support impacted communities
  • Encourage states and cities to assert their legal rights

So far, the formal push to condemn Trump’s pardons has largely come from Democrats, not Republican members of Congress and certainly not from any Mormon congressperson.

Based on reports from early January 2026, a Woodbury, Minnesota, man was detained by ICE agents for over nine hours after he followed and filmed them
.
Details of the Incident:
  • The Encounter: The incident began in a grocery store parking lot where the man (identified in reports as Ecklund) was following and recording ICE agents.
  • Physical Confrontation: During a third interaction, the man alleged that agents reached into his car, placed him in a headlock, and threw him to the ground, resulting in a black eye and facial injuries. [SOME OF THOSE INJURIES ARE VISIBLE ON HIS FACE]
  • Detention: He was held at a detention facility for more than nine hours but was never formally charged. [THIS IS A WELL-KNOWN TACTIC OF TYRANTS]
  • Context: The incident has sparked 1st Amendment debates, with scholars arguing that recording law enforcement is protected, while ICE FALSELY argued in a related Minnesota court case that following them is illegal.   [JUDGES HAVE ALREADY RULED THAT CITIZENS HAVE A RIGHT
  • TO FOLLOW AND TO RECORD ICE]
This incident is part of a broader, tense, and, in some cases, violent, crackdown by immigration authorities in Minnesota during this period.
