ACTION: CONTACTING LDS LAWMAKERS

MELISSA RECOMMENDS THAT LAWMAKERS TO THE FOLLOWING

In Congress, formal accountability would look like:

  • Voting on resolutions condemning or challenging pardons
  • Public statements criticizing the pardons
  • Supporting oversight or investigations
  • Investigate I.C.E.
  • Reduce or cap I.C.E. funding
  • Prohibit funds from being used for:
  1. Warrantless arrests
  2. Raids at schools, churches, hospitals
  3. Detention beyond a certain number of days
  4. Attach conditions to ICE funding
  • Narrow ICE’s enforcement authority
  • Require judicial warrants for arrests or searches
  • Mandate due process protections
  • Limit cooperation between ICE and local law enforcement
  • Strengthen detainee rights and access to legal counsel
  • Publicly condemn unlawful ICE practices
  • Use media, floor speeches, and letters
  • Support impacted communities
  • Encourage states and cities to assert their legal rights

So far, the formal push to condemn Trump’s pardons has largely come from Democrats, not Republican members of Congress and certainly not from any Mormon congressperson.
