In a recent Salt Lake Tribune article our newly elected senator, John Curtis, discussed how he is not hearing from many constituents. This seemed like not only a dare but a chance to explain that many of us expected him to be better than Lee. That his performance might explain our lack of communication. This thought led our creative genius Natalie to the Dear John letter campaign. actual letters we deliver to all of Curtis’ offices, and/or virtual campaign on social media. Letters are framed similar to the following (towing the line between leaving a romantic partner/elected official)

Dear John,

I thought things would be different with you. I had high hopes in the beginning that you would be a strong moderate voice in the Trump 2.0 term, but alas, when things got rough, you were nowhere to be found. You never raised your voice, nor vote, in opposition to the atrocities of Project 2025 and pro-authoritarian actions.

All my phone calls about unqualified cabinet members went unanswered.. My concerns about the BBB (budget cuts to social services, safety net, etc.) fell on deaf ears. The need to protect federal workers and aid around the world—ignored.

After witnessing brutal attacks by a violent (and lawless) police force created and directed by Trump and Stephen Miller against vulnerable communities—I didn’t’ hear a peep from you. We no longer have an effective HHS/CDC, thanks to RFK Jr., whom you confirmed. This means many people will unnecessarily die from anti-vax policies, lack of oversight of the food industry, and lack of experienced scientists protecting us from communicable diseases.

I could go on and on, with examples of the many ways you've disappointed me this past year, but I' doubtful you will change course. You will continue to support a fascist regime and accept the abandonment of Congress as a co-equal branch of government. Perhaps that is the reason why you have not heard from the masses during the ongoing government shutdown—we know it is a fool’s errand and that you won’t do anything differently.

You won’t support food assistance and affordable healthcare for your constituents, nor do anything to prevent the militarization of our cities. So, I’m writing to you now to let you know: I am officially leaving you and looking for a new, competent and ethical replacement, come November 2030.

I will continue to watch for signs that you have found your soul (I do believe in redemption). My heart is broken.

Sincerely,

Your Constituent

Knowledge: You are not alone.

71% of Utahns say politicians ‘ignore the will of voters,’ survey finds

September 12, 2024 (Utah Public Radio)

A new brief by the Utah Foundation found that 71% of Utah voters feel state politicians ignore the will of the people in favor of special interests.

Every year, the Utah Foundation surveys Utah voters on what issues are most important to them through the Utah Priorities Project. This year, politicians listening to voters was the second-highest concern behind housing affordability.

In a follow-up brief released on Wednesday, the project asked whether Utah voters feel listened to, looking for differences in party and religiosity.

Overall, 71% of respondents either somewhat or strongly believed that Utah politicians are too beholden to business, religious, or other special interests, and ignore the will of voters.

I don't know how many times I need to write this, but Utah's Senator Mike Lee is at it again, trying to do away with your public land. His thoughtful analysis of why we don't need public land this time? Border security, and why we need to absolutely do away with the Wilderness Act in order to do so.
