Administration’s Radical Personnel Cuts Bypassed Congress and Lacked Transparency, Obscuring Impact on Public Services

Almost a year since the Trump Administration began rapidly and radically cutting the federal workforce without congressional approval, it has for the first time released data publicly showing the extent of the cuts to specific agencies to date. Across government, these massive, rushed declines in personnel have caused disruptions and slowdowns in public services ranging from repairing infrastructure damage from hurricanes to removing lead contamination from public schools to answering questions from Social Security beneficiaries.^[1]

• Federal Financing Bank (Treasury): $59 billion
• Department of Education: $46.8 billion-
• No one hates Education more than Nazi, right.  
• Who is hurt the most by this illegal cut? 
• Cutting or dismantling the U.S. Department of Education (ED) would most heavily impact vulnerable student populations, specifically those with disabilities, students from low-income households, and students of color. These groups rely heavily on federal funding for specialized services, along with federal oversight to ensure equitable, non-discriminatory education. 
• Projected Deaths in a Decade (By 2030)
  • Over 14 Million Total: Research published in The Lancet and cited by UCLA warns of over 14 million additional preventable deaths by 2030.
  • Millions of Children: This includes about 4.5 million children under five.
  • Annual Rate: This averages over 2.4 million deaths per year, with more than 700,000 being young children annually.

HCR: Yesterday the Office of Personnel Management issued a final rule to strip civil service protections from about 50,000 federal employees, enabling the administration to replace nonpartisan civil servants hired for their skills with loyalists. Trump tried to do this at the end of his first term, but his successor, President Joe Biden, reversed the plan immediately upon taking office. The United States has had a nonpartisan civil service since 1883. When the government proposed the reintroduction of the political system the U.S. had before then, 94% of 40,000 public comments opposed the change. Only 5% supported it.
