GOP members of the Utah legislature worked overtime to pick their own voters in 2026. This process is called Gerrymandering.
They stacked the courts and added a special hand-picked court to hear their cases in the future.
Some lawmakers verbally attacked Utah's justices, especially the amazing women on the court. This is crazy since ALL justices were appointed by republicans.
At GOP convention, lawmakers vindictively, and without judicial evidence, called on voters to "not retain: our excellent supreme court justices. WOW. This was in response to not liking ruling made in favor of us voters.
Utah laws passed by GOP supermajority effectively also punished the Utah Courts, the female justices on the court and made highly partisan anti-voter changes to our courts. Click the link to a Nytimes particle about the hostility to women in Utah supermajority.
The Republican supermajority in the Utah Legislature aggressively pushed back against the utah courts following a series of landmark court rulings that struck down the state's extremely gerrymandered congressional maps.
This pushback has been characterized by critics as "attacking the umpire" through a combination of retaliatory legislation, institutional overhaul, and public condemnation aimed at shifting power away from the courts and back to the supermajority. [1, 2, 3]
⚖️ The "Court Stacking" & Panel Controversy
- Legislative Expansion of the Supreme Court: Lawmakers pushed through a two-seat legislative expansion of the Utah Supreme Court alongside handling recent high-profile judicial resignations, significantly shifting the makeup of the state's highest court. [1]
- Notably all candidates for the additional seats were white LDS men. The court is far less representative of Utah's population now than before this court-wrecking started.
- The two white men chosen to be added to the Utah Supreme Court had never been a judge before! Wow.
- The Three-Judge Panel Law (HB 392): In early 2026, lawmakers passed a law mandating that constitutional challenges to state laws must be stripped from a single district judge and handed to a newly created three-judge panel. [1, 2]. If their panel is ruled unconstitutional, some other sneaky paln is in place to subvert the will of the people and the constitution.
- October 2026 Constitutional Arguments: Lawyers for the redistricting lawsuit, Planned Parenthood (abortion trigger law), and a youth fossil-fuel suit came together before the Utah Supreme Court to argue that the legislature's creation of this "constitutional court" panel violates the separation of powers. They argue the legislature cannot alter the structure of a co-equal branch of government to force panel changes mid-case. [1, 2]

| Vote out Moore, Maloy, Kennedy, Cox, Lee and Curtis if you love our public lands. Only the first three are on the ballot this year. Gov Cox lies about Utah Voters approving of his horrible position on opening National monuments to mining and drilling by companies that donated to the GOP. Independent surveys by conservation organizations and groups like the Grand Canyon Trust consistently show that between 71% and 75% of Utah voters support maintaining monument protections.
