As of January 2026, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has released approximately 125,575 pages of records under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, but a significant portion of this material is heavily redacted.
Regarding the level of redactions:
- Pervasive Redactions: While there is no official count of exactly how many pages contain redactions, the DOJ has employed over 500 reviewers specifically to "review and redact millions of pages".
- Completely Obscured Content: In the initial batches released around the December 19, 2025 deadline, at least 550 pages were entirely blacked out. This included a high-profile 119-page New York Grand Jury file that was released as a completely solid black document.
- Protected Information: The DOJ maintains that redactions are legally required to protect the identities of more than 1,200 victims. However, critics and lawmakers allege that the agency is also improperly redacting the names of "politically exposed individuals and government officials," which would violate the specific terms of the Transparency Act.
- Unreleased Material: The overwhelming majority of the 5.2 million pages identified—more than 99%—remain unreleased because they are still undergoing the "intensive" redaction process.
For more details on the specific laws governing these releases, you can view the Epstein Files Transparency Act (H.R.4405) or check for new postings at the DOJ's Epstein Records Library.
